You must book your course in advance. Your course can begin on any Monday where appropriate or as stated in the brochure. The Liverpool School of English reserves the right to alter or cancel the course programme, change teachers and location and alter dates & fees from those stated in the brochure without prior notice.
Please send your registration fee, along with your signed application form and a copy of your passport, at least 4 weeks in advance of your course. Please note we cannot return your registration form under any circumstances (unless we are unable to accept your booking).
If you are a non-EU citizen wishing to study at The Liverpool School of English, you must have a visa or leave to remain in the UK that allows you to study full-time. This would normally be either a General Student Visa or a (Extended) Student Visitor Visa. Under current UKBA regulations, it is not possible to study on a normal tourist Visitor Visa or a Business Visa. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct visa type and appropriate leave to remain in the UK. If The Liverpool School of English finds that you do not have the correct visa and/or appropriate leave to remain, your course will be terminated. In this case any tuition fees paid are non-refundable. Information on visa types can be found on the Home Office website http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/ .
If you are applying for a General Student Visa under Tier 4 of the Points-based System, The Liverpool School of English will issue a CAS only on the understanding that it is your firm intention to study on the course booked and complete the attendance requirements. The Liverpool School of English is obliged to inform the Home Office where attendance is unsatisfactory or where a course is curtailed.
Disclosure of information
We remind you that students and/or agents and/or parents need to disclose medical information and details of any disabilities about the student to the school when the application is made.
All students applying to study at The Liverpool School of English agree to the disclosure of their data to appropriate bodies, such as the UK Border Agency and the British Council, as required by the Data Protection Act. The school sometimes takes photos or makes videos for use in marketing. Booking a course at the school implies consent for your images to be used in this way unless you tell us that you do not consent.
Students under the age of 18
In our main school, we accept students from the age of 16. All bookings on these courses are made on the basis that the students on this course may be over or under the age of 18.
Students under the age of 18 are children in British law. All students under 18 are expected to abide by UK laws which relate to the restriction of activities to under 18 year olds: in particular the purchase and consumption of alcohol and tobacco.
If any student under the age of 18 wishes to study on any course at The Liverpool School of English, the person or people with parental responsibility for them in their own country should complete a consent form. This form outlines the rules and conditions that will apply for the school to be able to accept a booking for a student under 18. The form can be obtained from the school or from the agent. If for any reason the school does not receive the consent form, it will be assumed that the general rules and conditions outlined in the form have been accepted by the parents/guardian of the student.
Students with disabilities or learning difficulties
If a student or his or her parents feels that the student has any specific learning requirements or special needs (for example, dyslexia) or physical disabilities, we strongly urge you or them to declare this at the application stage. In this way the school can ensure that we are in a position to consider your special requirements in a professional and appropriate manner.
We will assess all declared special needs or disabilities on a case by case basis. In some cases the school may feel that it does not have the resources or expertise to deal with certain levels of need, and this will be communicated to the parents or student prior to arrival in the UK. Where the school judges that it cannot properly accommodate a student's special needs through reasonable adjustment, the school reserves the right to refuse admission. Please note that currently the school has limited wheelchair access due to the nature of the Grade II listed building.
If a special need or disability is not disclosed at the time of booking but one is identified after arrival at The Liverpool School of English, then the school will discuss options for special provision as appropriate with the student and/or his or her parents. Please note that the school does not offer a service for identifying special needs and does not have specialist resources to do so. If it becomes clear that we cannot adequately deal with the student's particular needs through reasonable adjustment or by providing additional support (usually at additional cost), the school will endeavour to find a more appropriate provider in the UK or will make arrangements for the student to return home. We will not normally refund fees in these circumstances.
If you are being sponsored by your Embassy then a provisional letter of sponsorship is required before you can be issued with a visa letter or booking confirmation. You will not be permitted to start your course until a full letter of financial guarantee has been received by The Liverpool School of English.
It is your responsibility to be aware of your Embassy's procedures, what costs are covered and the expiry date of your financial guarantee. The registration fee and cost of materials needs to be covered by you. When we receive the first payment from the Embassy we will refund the registration fee to you.
When we have received your completed application form, registration fee and accepted you on a course, you will receive an invoice by email. Once the fees have been paid, you will receive the booking confirmation and pre-departure pack via email. If you require documents to be posted, please inform the school.
2. PAYMENT TERMS
You must pay your course fees in full 4 weeks before the start of the course. We will cancel your course and accommodation if we do not receive the payment and you do not contact us about this.

There is a 3% charge for credit card use and a 39p charge for debit card use. Please request the Authorisation Form for Card Payment from the Admissions team upon application.
Personal Bank Cheques
We cannot accept Euro cheques.
All payments should be in sterling (￡) unless agreed otherwise. Please make sure payment covers all sender's charges.
If you pay your fees by bank transfer, please mention your/the student's full name in the reference section of the transfer form so we know who the payment has come from. You should send a copy of the bank transfer receipt by fax or email as proof of payment. If we do not receive this, your booking confirmation and visa letter may be delayed.
We do not accept part payments of course fees. If you do not keep your balance up to date then you will not be able to attend the school.
Payments terms for accommodation
For stays of 4 weeks or less, accommodation fees are payable in full no less than 4 weeks before your arrival date.
For stays of 4 weeks or more, the first 4 weeks are payable no less than 4 weeks before your arrival date. All further accommodation bookings must be paid for 2 weeks in advance.
Please note it may not be possible for you to remain in the same homestay or residence accommodation if you choose to extend.
If you want to postpone your course, you must request this in writing. You may not postpone courses due to start within the next 28 days. You may only postpone if there is space available on the new course dates you wish to attend.
If you decide to cancel your course this must be done in writing by email or fax.
No cash refund or payment by other means will be made.
The registration, accommodation fee, bank charges, courier fees and CAS fee are non-refundable.
Refunds will be processed within 14 days of cancellation.
Cancellation fees are as follows:
Cancellation more than 28 days before the start of the course - Full refund
Cancellation from 28 days to 7 days before the start of the course - 50% of the course fees may be refunded
Cancellation less than 7 days before the start of the course - No refund
Once a course has started there will only be refunds under exceptional circumstances: e.g. serious illness or death in the family.
In either situation, evidence must be provided. Any refunds are at the discretion of the Principal.
Accommodation cancellation fees are as follows:
Cancellation more than 14 days before the start of the accommodation - Full refund
Cancellation less that 14 days before the start of the accommodation - 1 week of accommodation is payable to the school
This policy applies throughout your stay.
5. YOUR COURSE
Courses are non-transferable and non-refundable.
Some courses may not run as advertised if there are not enough students on the course. We reserve the right to offer an alternative option to students in this case, for example a reduced number of lessons for all or part of the course.
The Liverpool School of English strictly adheres to the published age limits for courses but reserves the right to accept students who are slightly younger than the minimum age. Applications from students outside the published age limits are treated on a case by case basis.
In extreme and very rare circumstances, the stated maximum class size might be exceeded. If this does happen, it will be only by one person and for a very limited period.
If you are a beginner then you should start within 3 weeks of the new term to facilitate an easier start to your course. If we determine that you are a beginner (usually A0 or A1 level on the Common European Framework) after your arrival if we are part way through a term, we reserve the right to offer you the cost-equivalent number of individual lessons where a beginners course is not available.
If you want to extend your course this is possible, provided there is space available. All course fees must be paid for in advance. Please note it may not be possible for you to remain in the same homestay or residence accommodation if you choose to extend your course. All extended accommodation bookings must be paid for 2 weeks in advance.
7. AIRPORT TRANSFER
If you have booked a transfer from the airport, please follow the instructions on your booking confirmation carefully. You should contact the transfer company directly if you are delayed. We reserve the right to transfer more than one student in the same car at the same cost. There is no refund if the flight details provided are incorrect.
We will not find accommodation for you if you need to get a visa in advance to study in the UK until you have successfully got your visa. Please keep the school informed of the progress of your visa application and let us know as soon as you have got it.
Accommodation is only arranged for full time students and only while they are studying at the school. If a student leaves the school, he or she will be asked to leave their accommodation.
Please send your full arrival details as soon as travel arrangements have been made. If we do not receive arrival details, the accommodation provider may not be available when you arrive.
While every effort will be made to ensure you are happy with your accommodation, The Liverpool School of English cannot guarantee that you can stay with one accommodation provider throughout your stay. Changes might occur because of emergencies or on rebooking.
Please note that if you want to take a holiday or return home for a period of time and leave your luggage in your accommodation then you will have to pay a retainer fee. Please discuss this with the Accommodation Officer.
If you wish to stay in homestay accommodation organised by the school, we will do everything possible to meet your requirements. This may not always be possible and we will give priority to medical requirements such as allergies. Many families in the UK have pets, so we will give priority for students preferring to live in a house without pets to students with medically-certified allergies.
All of our hosts live approximately 30 minutes from the school on public transport. The main bus/train stations are less than five minutes walk from the school. All of our homestays speak English as a first language or have native-like fluency and only speak English in the home. There may be different kinds of families, such as parents with children, older people, single parents etc.
You cannot pay your homestay directly for accommodation.
Your homestay will provide bedding and towels for your use. Your homestay will wash a reasonable amount of personal laundry (one load per week minimum). They are all advised to provide all adult students with a house key.
If you are absent from your homestay for a few nights, for example over a long weekend, you should not expect a refund of fees.
The Liverpool School of English uses several difference residences. This is available to students who are over 18.
If you stay in the residence, you are subject to the rules of the residence and you will need to sign a contract that you will follow these rules, please ask the school for a copy. For residence bookings there is an additional ￡45 non-refundable booking fee.
To take a holiday break in your course you need to complete a Holiday Request Form no less than 2 weeks in advance of your holiday. If the holiday is authorised it will not affect your attendance. If you take an unauthorised holiday (eg. You do not attend school but have not completed a Holiday Request Form) then your attendance will be affected and the relevant parties involved will be informed.

We strongly recommend that you take out travel and health insurance. The school will not be responsible for resolving any issues that arise from lack of insurance cover on the part of the student.
11. ATTENDANCE AND CONDUCT
Students will only receive a Certificate of Attendance if their attendance has been 80% or more. If your attendance is less than 80%, the school will, at its discretion, issue an enrolment certificate, confirming that you were enrolled on a course in the school.
If you are a sponsored student, poor attendance will be reported to your sponsor. If you are studying on a student visa, poor attendance will be reported to the UK Border Agency.
All students are subject to the school's policies and procedures, most of which are published on our website. We reserve the right to exclude any student who behaves in an unacceptable manner. In this case you will have to pay all course fees and any additional costs (e.g. for any damage caused).
It is your responsibility to provide us with your contact details in Liverpool and the contact details of your next of kin in your own country.
12. FORCE MAJEURE
The school is not liable for failure to perform its obligations if such failure is as a result of Acts of God (including fire, flood, earthquake, storm, hurricane, infectious diseases or pandemics or other natural disaster that are beyond the reasonable control of the parties), war, invasion, act of foreign enemies, hostilities (regardless of whether war is declared), civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection, military or usurped power or confiscation, terrorist activities, nationalisation, government sanction, blockage, embargo, labour dispute, strike, lockout or interruption or failure of electricity [or telephone service].
In the event of an outbreak of infectious disease, all students and or parents/guardians are required to comply with rules regarding quarantine as set by government agencies or by the school.
If the school asserts Force Majeure as a reason for failure to perform its obligations, then the school must prove that it took reasonable steps to minimise delay or damages caused by foreseeable events, that the school substantially fulfilled all non-excused obligations, and that the other party (student, agents etc.) was timely notified of the likelihood or actual occurrence of the event.
13. POLICY ON INTERNATIONAL EPIDEMIC OF AN INFECTIOUS DISEASE
Following the international outbreak of H1N1 flu virus in 2009, The Liverpool School of English has adopted a policy for dealing with international epidemic outbreaks of infectious disease. This policy will apply when UK government bodies or other recognised medical advice suggests that the school should take containing action to avoid the spread of the epidemic. It will not apply to isolated cases of illness.
All students coming to the school should make sure they have adequate travel insurance. This needs to cover medical expenses, cancellation and postponement. The school will not be able to cover expenses incurred by any illness, such as reorganising a flight or a longer stay in accommodation after the course has finished, so we advise all students to ensure that they have suitable insurance cover.
If an epidemic has been declared by the authorities, students should not travel to Liverpool if they suspect that they are carriers of the infectious disease in question. It is likely in any case that the airline will not allow the student to travel.
In these circumstances, if a student has another serious medical condition, he or she should consider whether they can postpone their visit to the UK. The school will consider any requests to postpone arrival sympathetically if students have a pre-existing serious medical condition.
The school will help the student to contact any government helpline and/or a doctor in the UK who will advise the student and prescribe medicine if students are unwell and suspected of having an infectious disease.
Any member of staff or student who is suffering from the declared infectious disease will be isolated from other students. Staff will be sent home and we will encourage students to stay at their homestay or other accommodation if possible until they feel better and/or when the doctor confirms they are fit to return to school. Students will be marked as authorised absences for the period they are away from school.
The school will keep in close touch with students if they are ill, as we always do, and if appropriate will provide work for the student to do at home. Students should inform the school when they feel fit to return to normal classes.
The school will not close unless there is a severe outbreak, following advice from the UK government and English UK. The school may have to take other short-term measures, such as combining classes, if staff numbers are significantly reduced through illness. The school will do all it can to ensure that the students receive the excellent provision that they would normally expect.
The school's terms and conditions fully outline the school's position regarding postponement or cancellation of courses.
14. POLICY ON DISRUPTION TO INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL
We always advise students travelling to the UK to take part in courses at The Liverpool School of English to take out good travel insurance. We would strongly recommend that you check the level of cover you have if your flight were delayed directly or indirectly due to poor weather, strike action, or for any other reason.
The Liverpool School of English's cancellation policy applies (see section 5).
In the event of flight delays and/or subsequent course cancellation or postponement, The Liverpool School of English will therefore not normally refund fees. However, given exceptional circumstances, where a cancellation can be seen to be directly related to closure of airspace, we will look sympathetically at the individual circumstances and may issue a credit for the full amount of the course fees, and assist students to rebook their course at a later date. In these circumstances, the school will not charge cancellation fees, although we may still charge for accommodation booked and not taken.
In all cases, we would ask that students and agents keep in close touch with the school by email and phone in the lead up to a journey if it appears likely that external conditions may affect a student's flight. These situations are usually fast-changing, and it is imperative that the school is kept informed of any changes of likely late arrivals, so that our transfer company and accommodation providers are kept up to date. The school's 24-hour emergency number (+44 (0)7711 009 634) can be called if vital information needs to be communicated, but please do not call the phone with unimportant information, as it is vital that the phone is kept free for genuine emergency situations.
Where an individual student travelling as part of a group chooses to cancel a course, we would look at the individual circumstances surrounding the decision and deal with it on a case by case basis.
The safety and welfare of every student at The Liverpool School of English is very important to us. We will therefore do our best to limit the distress and inconvenience if a student is forced to make last-minute changes to his or her arrival or departure plans. If students are unable to leave Liverpool at the end of their course, the school will assist students in finding temporary accommodation. Where possible, accommodation with host families will be extended, and this will be charged at a pro rata daily rate.
We have a special obligation to look after and ensure the safety of children under the age of 18. The school will offer all assistance in helping these students to investigate and book alternative ways of getting home.
